How to Prep Your Home For The Holidays

How to Prep Your Home For The Holidays

As the holiday countdown begins, we may find ourselves feeling stressed and spread thin. Between preparing your house for guests and juggling everything else that the holiday season brings, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. However, there are many simple tasks that can be done both inside and outside your home to better prepare you for the holiday season. Prep your home for the holidays by following these tips.

Exterior Maintenance

Preparing the exterior of your home before your guests arrive makes a great first impression.

Yard Work

Begin by clearing the clutter from your yard, porch, and deck. Tuck the toys away in the garage and put any yard equipment away as well. Rake up leaves, trim trees, and shape any bushes. While you’re landscaping, be on the lookout for any unusual holes or gaps into your home. Investigate for any critters that may have moved into your home without your knowledge – you may need to call an exterminator.

Lighting

Once your home’s exterior is organized and clean, look into lighting. While string lights for the holidays do a good job of providing a jolly ambiance, having some extra outdoor lights to brighten your driveway, sidewalk, and steps can help bring peace of mind to visitors. Ensure all light bulbs are working properly and replace the dead or broken ones.

Painting

Finally, a fresh coat of paint can spruce up your curbside appearance as well as provide an added layer of protection from outdoor elements. Fresh paint looks good, and it is important for the longevity of your home. Quality paint can go as far as protecting your home from weather damage, insects, dust, and even prevent exterior wood from rotting. Experts recommend painting wood siding every 3-7 years, aluminum siding every 5 years, and stucco every 5-6 years.

If that’s too much to accomplish before the holidays, you could start small by refinishing the trim around your home.

HVAC Maintenance

While it may not seem like it, there are many things you can do to prepare your HVAC system before guests arrive for the holidays. These steps for preparation are simple, but they’ll go a long way in ensuring comfort throughout your home.

Filter Change

If you haven’t already, kick off the season with a clean air filter. These filters should be changed every 1-3 months, and just before family arrives for the holidays is the perfect time to do so. Having a clean filter will keep your home’s air clean and comfortable, while helping you save money on your energy bill.

Maintenance

Next, schedule a maintenance visit for your system. This one is super easy because the only thing you have to do is call Climatech of Professional Air and we do the rest.

Routine maintenance checks will decrease the chances of having any unwanted and expensive surprises with your HVAC system. The last thing anyone wants is for your heat to start having issues when guests arrive. In fact, the number one cause of heating and air condition failures is lack of manufacturer recommended routine maintenance.

Heating

Finally, don’t be afraid to turn the heat down a few degrees when you know you have guests coming. While we know it doesn’t get too cold here in Pensacola, having a number of guests in your home is going to naturally warm the space. Don’t get overheated by keeping your home too warm, then bringing in a crowd!

Clean And Stock Up!

It’s important to start your holiday gatherings with a clean home. While a mess by the end is almost inevitable, try to start with a clean slate.

Bedrooms

Prepare the guest bedrooms and bathrooms for incoming arrivals by cleaning the space and clearing out space for your guest’s belongings. Having a clean space to settle into will ensure they feel they’re at a home away from home.

Preparations

Before guests arrive, ask if they require any special accommodations. Having certain food or hygiene products available will make your guests feel comfortable during their stay. Overall, you will need to stock up on food, beverages, and extra household supplies for your visitors. Having all these products available in your home will greatly reduce stress and prove you’re a tremendous host.
