Is Your Air Conditioning System Ready For Summer?

Hot Pensacola summers can put a strain on your air conditioning system, especially if the proper precautions haven’t been taken. Prevent costly emergency breakdowns while keeping energy costs down and comfort levels high this summer with just a few simple steps.

Step 1: Change The Air Filter

As the seasons change, your first step should always be to change the air filter in your air conditioning system. Dirty air filters can cause several problems in your home. Not only does air quality decrease, but airflow is reduced, putting more stress on your air conditioner and creating a less than comfortable atmosphere in your home. Replace your air filters every 1-3 months during the summer to keep good air quality, low energy costs, and high comfort levels.

Step 2: Check The Thermostat

If you haven’t turned on your air conditioning system in a while, now would be a good time to check and make sure all thermostat functions are working correctly. Flip the switch from “heat” to “cool” and make sure your system begins to run. Change temperatures throughout the day to make sure your system is cooling properly according to the thermostat settings.

If everything is in working order, go ahead and program your thermostat to your summer schedule. This reduces your energy costs and puts less strain on your cooling system when you’re not at home. Some new thermostats even offer features like smartphone controls that give you complete control over your home’s comfort from anywhere.

Step 3: Head Outside

Over time, debris, such as leaves and sticks, can build up on and around the outdoor system. Before turning your air conditioning system on for the season, head outside to remove any debris from around the outdoor system. Be sure to trim back any bushes or trees that are within 2-3 feet of your air conditioning system. Once all debris is removed from the area, use a garden hose to clean off any dust or dirt.

Step 4: Inspect Air Ducts

Over time air ducts can become built up with dust, dirt, and debris, negatively affecting your indoor air quality and making it more difficult for your air conditioning system to cool down your home. It is recommended that air ducts be inspected and cleaned by a professional every 3-5 years to ensure proper airflow and efficiency of your air conditioning system.

Step 5: Get Regular Maintenance

Regular preventative maintenance is an important step in keeping your air conditioning running smoothly throughout every season.
