Why Your Air Conditioner Is Blowing Hot Air
Did you recently turn on your air conditioner for the first time this season only to experience hot air blowing through your home? We’ve all been there! Our air conditioners always seem to break down at the worst time, and hot air coming out of your HVAC system, coupled with the hot air of spring and summer in Pensacola, Florida can make for a very uncomfortable home environment. If your air conditioner is blowing hot air, here are 6 possible reasons why.
1. Dirty Air Filters
While it’s important to always check and clean or change your air filters, it’s especially important if there’s a problem with your system. A dirty filter can reduce air flow and prevent your system from removing heat from the air that enters into your home. If this is the case, once you change your air filter, the problem should be resolved.
2. Thermostat Settings
Another important aspect of your system that’s easily and often overlooked is your thermostat. An incorrect thermostat setting could be the cause of the issue, especially as the temperatures go from cold to hot outside in the spring. Ensure your thermostat is set to “cool” and not “heat,” and ensure the fan setting is set to “auto” and not “on.” If the fan is set to “on,” the fan will continue running even when the system is not producing cool air.
3. Electricity
Has your power gone out lately? If an interruption in your power supply occurs, there could be a miscommunication between the different components of your HVAC system. It could cause your indoor and outdoor system to become disconnected, working separately or not at all. If you suspect this is the problem, first ensure your system is in fact turned on. If you’ve moved boxes around the attic or messed around in the utility closet, you could’ve accidentally turned your system off. Next, make sure there are no blown fuses, and flip the breaker back on if it’s off. Lastly, ensure nothing has come unplugged and if there is any electrical damage, call Climatech of Professional Air. We will come diagnose the issue and get your home feeling comfortable again!
4. Refrigerant Leak
Did you know your system doesn’t actually “use up” refrigerant? Refrigerant is the chemical component of your air conditioning system that makes the air that passes through it cold. If you hear a hissing sound coming from your air conditioner, you could have a refrigerant leak. Only licensed professionals can handle refrigerants, and you’ll need a professional to fix the leak as well. Contact Climatech of Professional Air if you live in Pensacola, FL and suspect a refrigerant leak from your HVAC system.
5. Evaporator Coils
Have you ever had someone tell you your system is frozen? When your evaporator coil removes heat from the air to cool it down, condensation often forms. If there is too much moisture in the air, it can freeze when it comes in contact with the evaporator coils leaving them iced over. When this happens, your system can’t properly perform and warm air in your home is usually the result. If you notice your system is frozen, turn it off and try to wait 24 hours before turning it on again to allow it time to thaw. If it freezes again, call Climatech of Professional Air.
6. Condenser Coils
The condenser coils are the part of your system that removes heat from your home. The condenser coils are part of the outdoor unit, and if they become clogged with dirt, leaves, or other debris, the condenser coil will not be able to expel heat properly. To clean the condenser coil, turn off the system, wear gloves to remove large objects, and spray the rest off with a hose.
